The Monti is proud to introduce the very first StorySLAM to hit Durham on March 10th at Alivia’s Durham Bistro. If you’re a fan of The Monti, then you’ll certainly be a fan of this new twist on an old idea. The concept is simple: you come to the StorySLAM on March 10th; if you have a story to tell on the theme of Secrets & Lies, submit your name to the hat. If you just want to watch - relax and enjoy! Throughout the show, we will randomly choose 10 names from the hat, and one by one, storytellers will take the stage. Each story is limited to 5 minutes, and the stories will be judged by select members of the audience. At the end of the night, we will have a winner of the StorySLAM.
10 STORYTELLERS
5 MINUTES EACH
1 WINNER
The doors at Alivia’s will open at 7pm and the cover is $5 at the door. There will be NO advanced ticketing! Based on The Monti’s popularity (the March 3rd show sold out in 7 minutes), it is advisable to arrive well before 7pm, especially if you hope to tell a story. Seating will be limited; there will be standing room as well. Food and drink will also be available! Stories begin at 8pm!
For more information, go to The Monti’s StorySLAM page or email jeff@themonti.org.
The Monti StorySLAMs join the schedule of the monthly, curated Monti events. Following the premier SLAM, the next SLAM is slated for April 14th directly following the curated Monti event with a special guest host and author, Sara Barron, from New York City’s The Moth. Once there have been ten StorySLAMs, a GrandSLAM competition will take place with the ten previous SLAM winners.

Hello:
You are being contacted in connection with a special project at Duke called
Arts and Engagement. This project provides for Duke students to work in
Carter Community Charter School (which is very close to the Duke campus) for
six weeks this spring providing an arts experience for a group of 4th
through 7th grade students. Your course with Pedro Lasch will integrate
this work into your classroom experience and expectations.
This is an all African American student population. The school is a public
charter school, and has no music or arts classes in their day-to-day
classes, making this work especially important for them.
The classes will basically meet twice weekly for six weeks, with a
culminating event the final week. All work is complete before Duke classes
end this semester.
In order to be involved, you DO NOT need to be available for all sessions.
You DO need to attend an orientation session this Sunday, to understand the
project fully. The attached schedule will outline the specific dates and
times for the work. You can return this form to me, or just let me know
you’ll be there Sunday, and we’ll figure out the schedule then. If you want
to take part, but can’t make the Sunday date, contact me and we’ll figure
out a back-up plan.
I hope you will consider taking part in this fun and important work. It will
be a great experience to be involved with these young folks!
Orientation Meeting is Sunday, in Rm 105 in Carr 106 (East Campus, Duke) from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Hi professors,
I am the editor of Duke’s art and literary magazine, The Archive. We’re currently looking for submissions for our upcoming Spring 2009 issue and I was hoping to enlist your help. Would you mind forwarding our submission information to students in your visual arts courses from this and last semester? In the past we’ve published primarily photography, but we would love to have more drawings and paintings in the magazine as well.
Thank you so much for your help!
Ryan Brown
